International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on 8th March to honour women’s achievements in socio-cultural, economic, and political spheres.
When did it start?
In 1908, 15000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. A year later, the first National Woman’s Day was celebrated in the USA. However, this celebration only became international 66 years later. It wasn’t until 1975 that the United Nations began celebrating it, with the theme “Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future”.
This year’s theme is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”.
Women in logistics
Unfortunately, the freight forwarding industry is still far from a gender equality: only 23% of female employees in the Europe and Central Asian region are represented in transports and logistics.
While the field is male dominated, several campaigns are taking place to sensitize new minds with seminars and conventions where women in the industry can recruit new talents.
Women in MOL Logistics UK
MOL Logistics UK can boast a significant number of women amongst their members of the staff.
As it often happens for many female repetitive in the business, some of them only begun by chance, thinking that it would be a temporary position.
Here is Dalila’s story:
“While attending university, I landed my first job in Logistics (and my first job ever!). Ten years later, I am still working in the same field:
I worked as an Import Clerk in a Transport Company in Southern Italy and I am currently Operations Team Supervisor here in MOL.
I am sure things are improving now but it was not that simple at first: as a young woman working with drivers, asserting my voice (often not just metaphorically), and showing that I understood what was being asked of me, was probably the most frustrating and disheartening part of the job.
Over time, I learned that this was actually a very dynamic job: it allowed me to travel, meet people from around the world, and, despite my initial concerns, I was able to use my degree in foreign languages.
Women are known for their resilience, so to anyone interested in starting a career in Freight Forwarding, I would encourage you to prove that there is no such thing as a male-only job“
