What began as a local logistics firm in Tilburg and a Japanese shipping line grew into the global supply chain partner we are today. This is the story of MOL Logistics Netherlands.
2. The Early Years: The Roots of Wassing and MOL (1884 – 1923)
Our story begins in 1884 in Japan, where Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) started on one side of the world as a pioneer in international shipping.
A few years later, on the other side of the globe, Wassing was founded in 1919 in the heart of Tilburg. Local industry was booming, and regional businesses needed reliable transport. Wassing stepped up immediately.

3. Decades of Physical Growth in the Region (1923 – 1969)
Wassing grew fast. You could see it in the constant demand for more capacity and larger facilities. In 1923, the company moved to Willem II street in Tilburg, laying the groundwork for an increasingly professional organization.
As post-war industry boomed across the region, Wassing outgrew its space once again and relocated to Ringbaan Noord in 1955. But space soon ran tight there too. In 1963, we made the move to our current headquarters, followed by expanding into facilities on Siriusstraat in 1969. Every move ensured we could serve our regional clients even better.
4. Pioneering New Markets: Air, Sea, and Warehousing (1946 – 1983)
A fun detail from that era: the very same counter that handled cargo also served as an emigration desk, where you could book travel for passengers and their belongings in one go.
In 1960, MOL Logistics was launched as a global logistics player. Not long after, in 1965, Wassing opened its Ocean Freight department in the Port of Rotterdam, right at the center of the emerging container revolution. By adding warehousing in 1983, the picture was complete. Wassing had transformed from a traditional transport firm into a full-service supply chain partner.
5. A New Era: The Arrival of MOL and Unprecedented Expansion (1990 – 2000)
The year 1990 marks the biggest turning point in our history. This was the year MOL Group acquired Wassing. Overnight, the Tilburg family business became part of an international logistics powerhouse. Local Dutch expertise and global capacity came together seamlessly.
This triggered a period of rapid acceleration at our home base, unfolding in three successive construction phases (I, II, and III) between 1990 and 1997. Warehouses and offices were significantly expanded to handle the booming flow of cargo. In 2000, this growth was crowned with the official name change to MOL Logistics.
6. European Synergy and a Centenary (2007 – 2019)
Over the years, our focus shifted increasingly toward Europe. Our European branches began collaborating more closely than ever, with the Dutch division serving as a key central hub in the network.
In 2019, we reached a major milestone: our 100th anniversary. A century of logistics craftsmanship, growing from a local transport company into an essential link in global supply chains. We celebrated this landmark together with the colleagues, partners, and clients who made this journey possible.
7. Ready for the Future: 2026 and Beyond
An impressive history is valuable, but for MOL Logistics Netherlands, it primarily serves as a launchpad for the future. The massive strides we’ve made only become clear when you compare then to now. Consider a shipment from Tilburg to Milan in 1955 versus that same run in 2026: a world of difference in lead time, paperwork, costs, and CO2 emissions. Documentation transformed completely too. Moving from classic carbon-copy CMRs to today’s streamlined e-CMRs.
In 2026, we mark a fresh chapter of renewal with a major renovation of Dutch offices. We are creating a workspace that not only fits modern, hybrid ways of working, but also inspires tomorrow’s logistics solutions.
By blending our historical roots with a drive for technological and sustainable progress, our mission is clear. Whether it’s air freight, sea freight, or advanced warehousing, MOL Logistics Netherlands is ready for the challenges of the coming decades. Ready for the future.
