Congested ports in China
Just after the festivities of Chinese New Year, Far East westbound transports are still showing heavily congested ports. This due to the volume which is presently available on the market and the “zero tolerance” China implemented due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, the Far East trade lanes are incurring congestion in the ports which cause tremendous challenges in the sailing schedules due to numerous changes. The most congested ports presently are Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong and Yantian.
Container excess dwell fee in US
On the other side of the globe, US ports are also facing huge problems due to the congestion at the operating terminals. The ports which are effected most are New York/Newark, Los Angeles/Long Beach and Norfolk. Because of this congestion the ports, Los Angeles and Long Beach are implementing a “container excess dwell fee / EDF” as per Febr 4th , 2022.
Ports of Europe
Also in Europe the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp are facing challenges. Vessels are delaying in berthing which causes also problems in the landside services as trucking and distribution.
For this year the space remains an issue on the trades as carriers still indicate vessels are fully booked. More capacity in the market is only expected 2023/2024 as in these years approx. 2 million TEU’s on capacity of new vessels is expected on the trades.
