1923: The electric crane and the logistics history of Tilburg
The year 1923 was a defining moment for the logistics history of Tilburg. It was the exact year the Wilhelminakanaal was officially completed and opened for shipping. Before this canal existed regional transport relied heavily on smaller roads and early railway connections.
The opening of the Wilhelminakanaal brought a massive influx of bulk materials to the city. The booming local textile factories and construction sites desperately needed raw materials like coal and wool.
Barges arrived fully loaded and the waterfront quickly became the beating heart of local industry.
The physical reality of early transshipment
While the canal provided a great new route unloading these massive barges was a grueling physical challenge. Dock workers moved cargo piece by piece. They lifted heavy sacks and raw materials from the ships directly onto the quay or into waiting horse carts. It was intense manual labor that completely dictated the pace of the entire local supply chain.
The sheer volume of incoming goods meant that muscle power alone was no longer sufficient to keep up with the industrial demand of the city.
A practical step into mechanization
That physical reality changed significantly in 1923. Because our premises had become too small, the company relocated to the Willem II straat. To handle the growing demand alongside this move, Wassing placed cranes at both the Piushaven and the Wilhelminakanaal. This marked our first real step into mechanization.
Instead of relying solely on manual labor, these cranes were specifically utilized for the efficient loading and unloading of coal. By speeding up the unloading process, many horse-drawn carts could be rapidly loaded with coal. This allowed us to process much more volume and reliably supply the regional energy companies and factories without unnecessary delays.
Building solid operational expertise
Operating this new equipment required our workers to develop a completely new set of skills. They had to understand early mechanics and master the physics of load balancing. It showed a willingness to invest in better tools to get the job done properly.
