Why these surcharges exist
In the world of transport, fuel prices are constantly fluctuating. Think of geopolitical tensions, rising oil prices or environmental regulations, all factors that directly impact transport costs.
To compensate for these fluctuations, transport companies apply fuel and environmental surcharges.
At MOL Logistics, we prioritise transparency. We explain where these surcharges come from, how they are calculated and what you can expect.
Our solution: targeted and transparent surcharges
In the world of transport, fuel prices are constantly fluctuating. Think of geopolitical tensions, rising oil prices or environmental regulations, all factors that directly impact transport costs.
To compensate for these fluctuations, transport companies apply fuel and environmental surcharges.
At MOL Logistics, we prioritise transparency. We explain where these surcharges come from, how they are calculated and what you can expect.

Diesel surcharge (road transport)
The amount of the diesel surcharge is determined by the transport company, usually based on the average diesel price from the previous month. This price is published by organisations such as Transport and Logistiek Nederland (TLN).

Bunker surcharge (ocean freight)
In ocean freight, a bunker surcharge or Bunker Adjustment Factor (BAF) is applied to absorb fluctuations in ship fuel prices. Depending on the shipping line, this surcharge may be fixed or variable.

IMO-surcharges (environmental regulations)
Due to stricter environmental regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) – such as IMO 2020 – vessels must switch to cleaner fuels.
This leads to additional costs, passed on through surcharges like the Low Sulphur Surcharge (LSS) or Environmental Fuel Fee (EFF).

Dangerous Goods Declaration (DGD)
When transporting hazardous goods by sea, a Dangerous Goods Declaration (DGD) is mandatory. This document confirms that the goods are correctly classified, packed, marked and labelled in accordance with IMO regulations.
It ensures that hazardous cargo is transported safely and in compliance with international standards. Preparing and submitting this declaration is part of a careful and compliant transport approach.
